Here is a perfect example of how getting to know your neighbours enriches your life and brings our community closer together. Tony and Steven are neighbours. Steven usually disappears for a walk after dinner to stretch his legs, sometimes not returning for a couple of hours. Because Steven is a man of few words, nobody has gotten much of an answer from him as to where he goes on these long walks. Tony, who lives in the same neighbourhood as Steven, is described by those who know him as a friendly and hospitable man. Evidently, Tony would see Steven out on his walks and would invite him for a cold beverage in his shop where they would shoot the breeze for a while. When asked how they know each other, Tony simply replies, “Well, he’s my neighbourâ€. Tony took the time to get to know Steven which resulted in the formation of a friendship and a mutual sense of belonging. They are neighbours. Knowing your neighbours benefits your entire community. Steven has a place to go when he’s out on his walks, Tony has found a new friend that shares his interest in motorcycles and engine repairs, and the entire neighbourhood is that much safer and welcoming. We all have neighbours we could get to know better; you can start by saying “Hiâ€.
