Chapter 18 [Leaving] As I sat in Joe's backyard with Sugar in my lap Elvis ran past me chasing after a tennis ball. I looked over my shoulder to see Nick coming down the back porch steps headed my way. "Hey you." I smiled as he sat down next to me. Sugar got up and ran after Elvis. "Hey." I wrapped my arms around him in a tight embrace. "Are you feeling okay?" I asked him and he nodded. "Did you take your insulin today?" "Yes, mom." He chuckled slightly as he rolled his eyes playfully. "Hey, I care about you. That's all." I told him. "I know." He smiled over at me then whistled for Elvis. He ran over with a damp tennis ball in his mouth and dropped it at Nick's side as Sugar pranced towards us trying to keep up. "Were you scared?" I asked Nick after he threw the ball. "Of what?" He asked. "Of being diagnosed." Nick paused in thought. "Honestly, yeah I was." He took another long pause. "But on the other hand I was relieved and happy that I had a familiar face there with me through it all. Particularly you." He slung an arm across my shoulders. "I missed hanging out with you and talking to you about everything and just having a best friend . . . hell I just missed you." Nick chuckled and I laughed lightly. "I missed you too." I grinned. "So, are you close with your dad?" I asked. He let his arm fall from my shoulders and shrugged. "Not really. It's just so weird having him here, though. I don't even know what to say to him."
